84 years ago today, during World War II, a bunch of Japanese planes launched a surprise attack on the US Naval base of Pearl Harbor, on the Hawaiian island of Oahu. Of course, that surprise attack means that Pearl Harbor was not even prepared for that attack.

This event led to the U.S. entering World War II and declaring war on the Empire of Japan. Because over 1,000 Americans were killed, it was considered the deadliest attack in U.S. history until the September 11 attacks in 2001.
