The Linux Experiment

Since a lot of people seem to have completely missed the instructions on my previous Poll and just voted willy nilly on distros they never used, thus skewing the results, I'm redoing the poll for more accurate results.

As a repeat: you DO NOT NEED TO vote on every distro. Just rate the ones you used and either don't vote on the others, or click the "Never tried it" option.

Sorry for people who already answered / shared, please consider voting and sharing again sow e can reach a solid number of answers :D

@sadakatutanzil

"Never tried" option makes the poll much better.

You probably should consider for next time that these forms are like a checklist and humans are just obsessed with completing checklists, but also, forms tend to require you fill in all the details so people felt compelled to despite not needing to.

An inverted scale for Arch would have been hilarious

Done and answered as honestly as possible. I completely missed the first poll. Would be good to have a poll on desktop environments. My rating for DEs would be KDE > Cinnamon > Gnome > XFCE > MATE. I havent tried any others but interested in hyprland which i may try next and popOS Cosmos

@swagmuffin9000

some feedback: ubuntu's flaship (gnome) feels completely different to something like kde, cinnamon, xfce, etc. i'd have ubuntu, and another option for the flavours either all together, or each separate. great list and poll btw, i left 3 distros in the bottom field for you.

Pretty awesome to.see mageia on the list. That's what got me into Linux proper some 14-15 years ago

Generally speaking all Project Universal Blue rocks.

@cypher0124

I havent tried most of those and i answered that honestly. My best experience has been with plain ubuntu for the hardware compatability.

I have tried many of these distros but it's been years, maybe more than a decade, and so my opinion of them is probably outdated.. And so I considered myself "never tried" But in reality it shapes my distro choice of today (manjaro)

The first page should ask the users to select the distros they've tried/used from a list of distros with checkboxes. Then the second page should ask the user to rate the distros that the users selected from the first page. Then finally, the last page should ask what distro user has tried or recommends but wasn't listed in the survey. I don't know if you're able to do that in Nextcloud.

@OctoberNight-rr7ny

in the future I think steam OS should have 2 questions. One how do you like it as a handheld gaming/ console, and then the second how do you like it as a main desktop. The reason I say this 99% of the distros listed are great desktop experience but fall behind steam os in gaming and the opposite happens with steam os.

Here are a few of my ratings that I have additional thoughts about: Fedora Workstation & Silverblue: 2/5 Probably my hottest take here, but these just straight up Did Not Work for me, ever, no matter whether I tried installing it on my old PC or my new one. Maybe I just got particularly unlucky with my setups, but it did not give a good first impression, especially when every other distro I've tried has behaved much better. Probably should've just given it a 1 now that I look back, but from what I've seen of Fedora, it looks pretty nice. If only it worked on my machine šŸ˜®ā€šŸ’Ø Tuxedo OS: 4/5 This would have been a 5/5 if that Ubuntu rebase update back in November didn't fail and completely screw up my system. That blunder aside though, I really liked Tuxedo OS! Again, that botched update just kinda left a bad taste in my mouth and led me to try KDE Neon instead, which I'm currently using and quite liking, occasional technical hiccups asid

4 distros i tried 2/5 - cachyos came with paru, downloaded yay, then both of them refused to work at all. I liked the installation with all the WM's, but my experience with it was not fun. 3/5 - Fedora Workstation (40) The one that I used the longest, for around 4 months. It taught me a lot about linux that helped when I swapped to arch, but I found it pretty mediocore with gnome being its default, F41 removing x11 as a default option, and a couple other issues. I will say I do like the gnome terminal and text editor, which I still use for my arch install today. 4/5 Mint - I used this on my dads pc since my sister already had it installed. It was my first actual linux expierence, and for that it was pretty good. I found cinnamon pretty good for a default, it didn't have any issues until I set up more complicated stuff (such as i3 for specific minecraft purposes, but in i3 I couldn't update/install dot deb's) and it felt better than fedora, even if I didn't use it for my personal PC. 5/5 - Arch Despite a long install process for my first time installing, after I got into a live enviorment (kde plasma) I was able to install everything I wanted and set up everything I wanted noticably faster and better than my previous fedora install. I built yay, and the AUR and wiki has been really helpful in the last month since I've installed. I don't feel any need to change distros now, since I have the biggest documentation in the form of the wiki for any issues, and I have a few friends who use arch if there is something out of the ordinary (such as disabling steam overlay w/ a blank preload command to launch tf2). My best experience (so far) and the one im using now. Maybe this will go down to 4/5 if I have an absurd amount of issues setting up wayland w/ my nvidia gpu, but rn im just on i3 and I have really enjoyed the arch experience

@Thradhrion

I wish that the "Ubuntu and its flavors" was broken out. I much much prefer Kubuntu over Ubuntu.

@RCTechworks

I would love to switch to Fedora, but some of my software is only supported on debian based distros. Compatibility is improving on Fedora, but it is just not there yet. The facts are that Ubuntu is a much more popular distro and has the most tools made for it. So I will stay on Ubuntu whether I like it or not! It is like the "windows" version of linux. Take that whatever way you want. šŸ˜

@92redferrari

I've surprised myself by trying gnome after KDE and quite like it. Previously slagged it off for being Mac like to which I received critical comments and I retried it and was pretty good.
