I try to get 8 hours of sleep but can't manage in one go, at night 5 hours of sleep and then 1.5 hours in afternoon. Is it good or bad, while I have joined gym from last month to build muscles?

When I was in college I slept on average 4.5 to 5 hours a night and I don't remember any negative aspects, I did well in class, graduated with honors and had a wonderful social life. Later in life while raising my kids as a single dad, I usually got about 6 hours sleep which was all I could manage after my work day, making dinner, going over homework with the kids, getting them to bed, completing my requirements and finally bed. I gained a lot of weight during those years but I don't ascribe it to lack of sleep but rather to having to do everything and worry about everything on my own. After my kids graduated college I was diagnosed with sleep apnea and made an effort to sleep at least 7 hours per night, but often found myself lying awake in bed because I could not sleep more than 5 or 6 hours. Now in my "3rd age", I have narcolepsy which means I can fall asleep any time of the day - and when I do in the afternoons, I find I cannot get to sleep at night.

being a shift worker my sleep is all over place and ranges from some days getting 4 other up to 8... was on nightshift last week and the neighbours are getting a new driveway, even with ear plugs all i could hear was the kango hammer going most of the day from Monday to Wednesday, ended up taking a couple of half night holidays to try and get some peaceful sleep, of all the things i do in life getting consistent sleep is the hardest thing for me as training and diet i find are easy but switching off and sleeping i really do struggle with even following sleep protocols like no fluids, food or screen time so many hours before bedtime

@Doctor Mike Diamonds Few questions: 1) Can we build muscles by doing 36hrs fast twice a month? 2) Can women do 36hrs fast while menstruation cycle? 3) Can you please do a video about stem cell regeneration by this 2025 year end?

I used to need 8 to 9 hours to feel fully rested. Since retirement 4 years ago in a 69 on finding that I'm waking up after 5:00 or 6 hours and struggling to get back to sleep in an effort to get at least 7-8. I frequently use melatonin before going to bed and sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't.
