Longtime fans of the channel might remember Dr. Abel Gomez. He guest starred in my Intro to Indigenous Religions video five years ago! Dr. Gomez is back for a live lecture on indigenous spirituality TODAY. Join here: www.religiondepartment.com/offers/YhTLCz27/checkou…

For many Indigenous peoples around the world, land is central to identity, religion, politics, and culture. Creation stories often recount Indigenous nations being both FROM a place and OF a place, and ceremonial practices often situate Indigenous peoples within a web of relationships and responsibilities to land.

Join Dr. Gomez as he explores how land and spirituality intertwine. The lecture starts in just a few hours — 1:00 PM EST!

For a sec this sounded like an "In memoriam" post and I was very concerned, glad he's doing alright

@OneMoreDesu

Attributing land to spirituality is all well and good but the issue is that bad actors use them to justify expansionism and atrocity.

Given how this year was going I was afraid you were about to tell us he’d been killed or deported to South Sudan or something.

I think that even when it comes to the big 5 world religions, they were all originally indigenous religions. Judaism, Christianity and Islam seem to place great emphasis on controlling a very specific piece of real estate in the Middle East, in order for their “end times” to unfold. Hinduism venerates the Ganges river. In Buddhism there seems to be the least attachment to any specific sacred land; although from a Buddhist perspective one could argue that all of the land on earth is sacred.
