August 16, 2025 From Bible History, 2 Samuel 21:1-6 1 There was a famine during the days of David for three consecutive years. So David inquired of the Lord, and the Lord said, "Bloodguilt is upon Saul and his household, for he killed the Gibeonites." 2 So the king summoned the Gibeonites and told them: The Gibeonites were not Israelites, but a remnant of the Amorites, with whom the Israelites had made a covenant. Saul, in his zeal for Israel and Judah, sought to destroy them. 3 David said to the Gibeonites, "What shall I do for you? And what restitution shall I make you, that you may bless the Lord's inheritance?" 4 The Gibeonites said to him, "The issue between us and Saul and his family is not about silver or gold, or about us killing anyone in Israel." David replied, "What then should I do to you?" 5 They answered the king, "The man who sought to destroy us, who conspired to destroy us so that we would no longer have any presence in the territory of Israel, 6 hand over to us seven of his sons, and we will make a public spectacle for the Lord at Gibeah, Saul's chosen one." The king replied, "We will." Three Years of Famine The Cause of the Famine 2 Samuel chapters 21-24 are considered a supplement to the Book of Samuel. It is divided into six sections, but the text is not necessarily in chronological order. Today's passage focuses on the causes of famine and their resolution. In the land of Canaan, rain represented God's blessing, while famine represented God's judgment. A famine lasted for three years in the land of Canaan. There must have been some cause. (1) The cause was Saul and his family's murder of the Gibeonites. This slaughter is only mentioned in this passage. (2) Numbers 35:33 states, "You shall not defile the land in which you live, for blood defiles the land. No atonement for the bloodshed of the land shall be made for it except by the blood of those who shed the blood on it." (3) The Gibeonites had a covenant with the Israelites, giving them the right to live in peace (Joshua 9:3-27). Saul had spared the Amalekites, who should have been destroyed, and had slaughtered the Gibeonites, who should have been spared, thereby defiled the land. Solution to the Problem David summoned the Gibeonites to seek a solution to the problem. (1) The Gibeonites responded that this problem could not be solved with money, and that they did not have the authority to kill the Israelites. (2) David then asked what he should do. (3) The Gibeonites' response was that they wanted seven of Saul's descendants. It is important to note that the Gibeonites were not making this request out of a desire for revenge. The issue was that the covenant before God had been broken, resulting in the desecration of the Promised Land. (4) Knowing this, David reluctantly agreed. This passage must not be misunderstood. It describes what displeases God and the method that must be used to resolve it. The method of atonement for blood with blood foreshadows the crucifixion of Jesus Christ. Our sins would not have been forgiven without the blood sacrifice of Jesus Christ. Let us learn to resolve problems in God's way. Today's Prayer God, the Father of Jesus Christ, may I walk today with your joy as my joy and your sorrow as my sorrow. I pray this in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ. Amen. 2 Samuel 21:7-14 7 But the king spared Mephibosheth the son of Jonathan the son of Saul because of the oath that David had sworn to the Lord between David and Jonathan the son of Saul. 8 So the king took Armoni and Mephibosheth, the two sons of Rizpah the daughter of Aiah, whom he had born to Saul, and the five sons of Merab the daughter of Saul, whom he had born to Adriel the son of Barzillai the Meholathite. 9 He handed them over to the Gibeonites, who exposed them on the mountain before the Lord. All seven were killed together. They were put to death at the beginning of harvest, at the beginning of the barley harvest. 10 Rizpah daughter of Aiah took off her sackcloth and spread it on a rock, and sat down so that the birds of the air by day and the beasts of the field by night might not come near the carcass, from the beginning of harvest until the rain fell on them from the sky. 11 David was told what Saul's concubine Rizpah daughter of Aiah had done. 12 So David went and took Saul's bones and the bones of his son Jonathan from the men of Jabesh Gilead, whom the Philistines had stolen from the square of Beth-shan, where they had publicly exposed Saul on the day they killed him at Gilboa. 13 When David brought up the bones of Saul and the bones of his son Jonathan from there, the people gathered up the bones of those who had been publicly exposed. 14 So they buried the bones of Saul and his son Jonathan in the tomb of Kish, Saul's father, at Zela in the land of Benjamin, and did as the king commanded. Later, God was moved by the nation's prayer. Rain from Heaven The Seven Executed To heal the polluted land, the blood of those who caused it was necessary to shed it. Saul's house could essentially be called a "house of blood." While the execution here was for Saul's sin, it also represented a judgment for his descendants' own sins. (1) Selecting the seven men to be executed was a very painful task for David. He excluded Jonathan's son Mephibosheth from the list because of his oath to Jonathan (1 Samuel 20:14-16). (2) He chose seven women: two children of Saul's concubine Rizpah, who had a history of having an affair with General Abner after Saul's death (3:7-8); and five children of Saul's daughter Merab, who was intended to be David's wife but ended up marrying Adriel (1 Samuel 18:17-19). (3) These seven women were executed on a mountain at the beginning of the barley harvest (around April today) and were publicly displayed. Their public execution appeased the Lord's wrath. Rizpah's Action: The bodies of the seven women were left exposed to the elements. It was Rizpah who protected them from birds of prey and wild animals. (1) She kept watch on a rock "from the beginning of harvest until the rain fell from the sky," a period of approximately six months, from April to October. (2) In the rainy season (October), rain fell from heaven. This meant that the Lord's anger was appeased and the land was healed. (3) Delighted by the rain and moved by Rizpah's actions, David began the burial of Saul and Jonathan, which had remained undisturbed. Saul and Jonathan's bones were removed from Jabesh-Gilead and buried with the remains of the seven others who had been publicly exposed in the tomb of Saul's father, Kish, in the land of the tribe of Benjamin. (4) All this pleased God, who was "moved by the prayer of the nation." Do you have peace with God? It is the sacrifice of Jesus Christ that reconciles us to God. "Having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ" (Romans 5:1). Today's Prayer God, the Father of Jesus Christ, thank you for the peace you have now received through the Lord Jesus Christ. In the name of the Lord Jesus Christ, I pray. Amen.
