Such a great film! And I never would have watched it, but for your recommendation! Thank you so much, CC!

Doesn't bear imagining being in The Hürtgen Forest crouching in a frozen foxhole that is too shallow to afford much protection. No hot food for days, just eking out meagre K rations while German artillery lob shells & mortars into the top of the trees that shower you with snow & wood splinters that cause horrendous wounds. However good a movie is, it doesn't scratch the surface of reality. Thanks for the post!

Your film essay is a wonderful companion to Battleground, a favorite since I was a mere stripling.

The 80th anniversary of the Battle of the Bulge has people revisiting this pivotal moment in history, and it seems to be sparking renewed interest in my video on the making of MGM's 1949 war film Battleground. Directed by William Wellman and starring Van Johnson, John Hodiak, Ricardo Montalbán, George Murphy, and James Whitmore—plus a cast of MGM up-and-comers alongside real Bulge veterans from the 101st Airborne—it's truly one of the best war films ever made.
