Sadism, the need to inflict cruelty for pleasure, along with psychopathy, the ability to believe one's own invented reality.
"YOU ARE WHAT I AM" is the motto of the sadist. They feel deep shame for their inadequacies but are unable to process the shame, so when they see even a trace of it (or invent it in the case of the psychopath) in others they need to make that person feel the same; referred to as "confession through projection," or "narcissistic #projection"
"Trolling" is defined as saying things that aren't true with the hopes of provoking a negative response. While inflicting cruelty is effective enough for a sadist to get pleasure, eliciting a negative response is even more fulfilling. In fact, when you do (deservedly) give them the negative response, it further justifies - in their mind - their cruelty.
Then it's just a matter of rinse and repeat, once they find someone who will give the desired reaction, they'll continue seeking gratification.
The only real way to deal with them is to ignore them - though i tend to point out their behavior while making sure to never insult them back (even though they deserve it) so that i never give them the satisfaction they're craving.
