If you experience this like me. USE EARPLANES!!!!!!!! I used to cry on descent. Every time. Earplanes saved me on SO MANY FLIGHTS!!!! EARPLANES GET THEM!!!!

I was a Navy Diver . I blew my sinuses out during a dive. If I have a cold it can get be painful .

More discomfort than pain but I wish the planes had more air pressure or more oxygen during the flight.

But that is why I always travel with gum! Not just on air travel road trip trips too

Only one time, when i was sick and i couldn't manage the pressure in my ears. One of my ears didn't go back to normal for several days afterward and I couldn't hear much in that ear during that time

Yes, because I had cold. That’s why we never flew when we had cold as crew. I was flight attendant for about 10 years

I learned at an early age to yawn upon takeoff and landing to clear my ears .

I take pseudoephedrine about a half hour before taking off and it helps with the ear issues.

I can pop my ears at will so taking off or landing doesn't bother me. That's really my favorite part of flying is taking off and landing!!

A long time ago we bought these little corkscrew (I -don’t know what they’re made out of rubber? plastic?) earplugs that 30 minutes before the flight takes off you hold your nose and blow and then you gently screw them into your ears, then once you’re up in the air, you can take them out and then 30 minutes before descent do the exact same thing -they have helped tremendously. I still have a lot of pressure, but not like it was before where it was more painful and it wouldn’t go away after my flight was over.

Not ear pain but sinus...flying with a head cold, my sinuses felt like they were going to explode on departure...everything evened out on the flight and then we started descent...could not wait for that to end :( Was a milk run through northern Canada (6 stops in 4 days) so I got to repeat the experience several times, I seriously thought I was not going to make it...

My ENT told me to take a Sudafed 30 minutes before takeoff. Works like a charm. Used to be crippled by the ear pain.

Grossness alert! A day before a business flight I had a very bad earache. As the flight took off, I felt a sudden excruciating stabbing pain in my eardrum, followed by what sounded like someone pounding on a bass drum in my ear. A few seconds later, I had rivers of green smelly discharge coming from my ear. It was so painful, and it just made the entire flight miserable. Luckily I'm a prepared traveler and carry several of those tiny tissue packets, so I was able to triage without drawing attention to myself. I was afraid that 1) I would piss off the flight attendants, or 2) worse, divert the flight. It eventually drained, but it kept leaking throughout the entire week of my trip. Yuck. When I got home I immediately went to the ENT, and as expected, I had a very severe staph infection and a large hole in my eardrum. Not fun. Looking back I should've gone to a local emergent care, but due to my military work ethic "nothing comes before the job", and because I'm a military retiree, going to the doctor outside of your home area can mean you pay for medical care up front, and it might not get reimbursed. Lessons learned.

Just about every flight. I had to start using ear plugs.
