Marla, Plain & Small

This fabric and lettuce hem are very reminiscent (in a good way) of something I would have worn around 1997, but the bust line and exposed seams give it an updated twist.

This is the Celeste Frock pattern from @lydianaomistudio turned into a cropped shirt.

I initially thought I had enough fabric to make the full dress but discovered I didn’t as I laid out the pattern pieces. This was vintage fabric I had in my stash. My fabric only had 40% stretch, and I couldn’t find any locally with the required 50% stretch, so I made some changes to the pattern. I sewed it as directed, and the top fit like a body suit. It was a fun look, but I definitely wanted something looser. I added a back panel to add width. Instead of tapering the neckline of the panel, I made a mini cowl neck at the back. I thought since I was already experimenting by this point that I’d keep going. I added an optional extension at the back of the shirt that could add length or could be tucked under to keep it cropped.

I plan on making this pattern again in the dress length once I can find the right fabric.

Don’t be afraid to experiment!
