Gaster was experimenting with DT and the effects it has on monsters and their combat abilities, Gaster would set up an experiment with sans using a simulation and DT but the other scientists would "overlook" some of the logistics of it. Gaster watched from a secret window as Sans was subjected to this experiment he started losing it and fighting as hard as he could tearing a hole through the true lab and escaping the simulation. lost in his madness he just kept attacking in an attempt to escape the madness. Gaster would quickly head to the Underground Observation Room and look for Sans on the cameras. he was starting to head towards Waterfall but Gaster used loud speakers to lure Sans back to the lab where he subdued Sans and quickly set him up to the DT-E as multiple warnings and errors showed up on the screens Gaster ignored them out of desperation. eventually Sans started showing some normalcy and Gaster put him in a contained room where he could observe Sans. Sans had woken up and, feeling not very well, he started making jokes and being his self again. in the following months Sans was watched closely by Gaster. Gaster was observing his behavior and actions to make sure nothing happens. when he was certain about Sans, he finally could take a rest. or so he thought. the human fell in the underground. Gaster found out by glancing through the cameras. he decided to ask Sans to take care of them, the comedian agreed. using shortcut Sans got to the human, but they weren't much kind of Sans so they attacked him. Sans wasn't prepared for this and took a hit, surprisingly surviving it. after getting hit, Sans flashed back to the simulation...it was in the human-monster war: humans slaughtering monsters in a village. Sans was surrounded and he felt smth is wrong: humans were filled with hatred and there were no details on them except one: the similar to Chara's red smile. Sans went unconscious. after waking up, he noticed the dust around the ruins. that triggered him as much as the flashback. in a state of madness he started to think how to stop the human and he came up to the only solution: to sacrifice some monsters to prevent the full monsterkind extermination. but first he decided to get rid of his old clothes since it got torn enough to be useless. he found some kind of robe that was thrown out long time ago. using his magic and emotions, he kills monsters without any effort...even tho he regrets it at some point. after getting the necessary lv, he finally confronts human for the last time. after a long time, Sans finishes the fight with knocking human down and getting them to Gaster's laboratory. since that day they used human's soul as a source of DT hoping it will be more safe
