As much as I adore Mario 2, Mario 3 embodies what it means to be an action platformer. Mario 2 does many things better than 3, but as a total package, doesn’t surpass it.

Mario 2 is dope but let’s not forget Mario 3 changed the game.

While Super Mario Bros. 2 is a great game, even though it didn't start as a Super Mario game originally, with the multiple playable characters - each with their own unique playstyle, bizarre/new enemy types/level design, and creative secrets of its' own! My pick would be Super Mario Bros. 3 and it isn't really close because it took everything that made the original an all-time classic (gameplay, level design, power-ups, secrets, boss battles, challenge, music/sound) and improved/enhanced it in almost every way imaginable! The precise platforming gameplay returns, but the introduction to the Koopalings, unique-themed worlds (Giant Land, Pipe Land) with the fun-to-explore overworld maps, mushroom huts, secret coin ships, mini-games, warp whistles and some creative power-ups (Frog Suit, Hammer Bros Suit, Tanooki Suit) including an all-timer in the Raccoon Leaf take SMB3 to the next level for me! The 2-player co-op and competitive battle mode were also great features that SMB2 lacked as it was single-player only. My anticipation for SMB3 was off the charts after seeing 'The Wizard' movie in theaters and when I opened SMB3 as a surprise gift that following Easter, it did NOT disappoint! It delivered and then some! While I have fond memories of a lot of start-up franchises on the NES, SMB3 is by far my favorite game and the one that defines that console generation for me, so it really is an easy choice for me even though I do appreciate the uniqueness that SMB2 brings to the series! Great poll and I'm glad I was able to FINALLY settle this debate once and for all! 😉
