People wake up early in the morning and apply ubtan, a mixture of sesame oil, herbs, flowers, wheat flour and turmeric on their bodies. Narak Chaturdashi puja is performed by offering oil, flowers and sandalwood. Lord Hanuman is offered coconuts and prasad of sesame seed, jaggery and poha with ghee and sugar. Maa Kali's favourite red hibiscus garlands, preferably 108 hibiscus are offered to the Goddess with Naivedyam. The ritual of offering lemon garlands to the Goddess on the occasion of Kali Chaudas. Devotees wear black clothes and visit Kali temples to offer flowers and coconuts to the deity. People take a special bath known as Abhyanga Snan before dawn or sunrise on this day which is a must to do on Narak Chaturdashi day. It protects from poverty, unforeseen events and misfortune.
