Great Depression Cooking with Clara

August was one of Clara's favorite months. Her birthday was August, 18 (she would have been 108 this year!) and her son's Birthday was August, 22. But the real reason she loved August was because it's the hottest month. It was rare to ever see her without a sweater, but in August you could even catch her on the porch with an open collar shirt!

I enjoyed Clara's videos. And what a way to document your grandmother! Always cheerful and upbeat. She was always so sweet and humble. She seemed very surprised over her online popularity. Her little kitchen reminded me of my grandmother's kitchen with all of the nostalgic things.

I have watched and rewatched her videos, own the book. Just now pulled it out looking for the artichoke recipe. She reminded me of my own grandmother but now it’s my mom, who’ll be 96 this year. The mannerisms and words are now familiar once again.

I enjoyed this lovely lady so much! What a lovely picture! Though she seemed amazed to have such a following, she seemed to enjoy the experience. The videos were a magical combination of her stories about how her family survived the Depression, as well as all those fascinating recipes. Thank you so much for all you did, Christopher, to share your grandmother, Clara, with us. She was a gem! And I still enjoy watching those videos!
