Excellent. My cousin used to say the first — attributing the closed door as “God closing one door as a way of urging you to USE the other door that HE had already opened for you “ (( She was a Finnish person raised in the fundamentalist Apostolic tradition )). But the wisdom of the statement is important ( even to an agnostic like me ) because it reminds us that there are ALWAYS many paths before you, and if the path you are on isn’t working, try another !! My problem with that advice for some people. Is that brain damage, Fetal alcohol syndrome, genetic disorders, and a variety of mental illnesses or addictions and other disabilities exist !! And those differences in ability seriously limit the number of doors available that can lead to positive outcomes that are at least accepted, if not embraced by other people. Worse, there are few doors available to those people that our society actually VALUES !! Consequently, a huge number of people simply do not have the ability or capacity to perform tasks that are valuable and desired . These people are (( often through no fault of their own. Like the Fetal Alcohol Syndrome folks, for example, or the Myotonic Dystrophy kids I married into )) required, even demanded, to do things that normal people can do easily but that they cannot do at all. It would be a lot better world if we did not blame, or worse, punish (( !!! )) people who are not performing “adequately “ but instead find them supported life paths — open doors, if you will—to lives (( however diminished by their disabilities )) that are valued —even celebrated !! Helen Keller achieved much and is deservedly celebrated — but she did not do it ALONE !! People stepped in and helped !!! EFFECTIVELY !!! We must NOT expect God to open doors that people have the power to open for those who cannot open those doors for themselves. That is our job, as people who touch the diminished lives by of the mentally ill, the folks with Fetal Alcohol Syndrome, the victims of genetic disorders, — the list goes on and on !!! — and build the pathways to success and a valued life, and open (( or at least create )) those doors you speak of !!!
