THE WARRIOR MERMAID’S NEW HEIGHTS 27 – THE ESCOVEDO CODE (Part 5) Even though it was mid-October, that Sunday morning felt scorching — figuratively speaking. Jenny sent a message in the group chat, and the Lass-Kickers descended on her place. On the TV, the map of the Jeff Hyman High library that Jezzie had drawn appeared, with an X marking something intriguing. The school, famous for girls’ basketball, was about to become the stage for an exciting mystery. “Okay, let me get this straight,” Fantine was still trying to make sense of it, “Jezzie hid something valuable under the library floor and nobody ever found it?” “Fingers crossed it’s still there, Captain.” Jenny said, arms crossed. “I went through the DOE archives — the wooden floor hasn’t been touched since the ’60s.” “So, what are we waiting for?” Soozie was already pulling her hair into a high bun. Jenny peeked out the window at the sun rising over Brooklyn. “Let’s go! It’s Sunday, the school’s empty! If we leave now, we’ll catch the perfect sunlight!” “Absolutely! I’ve always wanted to vandalize that library!” Betty grabbed her Chilean flag jacket. “Alright, ladies!” Jenny declared, pointing at the TV. “Whatever Jezzie hid there
it’s ours today!” While the Lass-Kickers were getting ready, Jezebel was in the prison chapel, handcuffed to the bench in front of the organ, speaking in Spanish with a priest. “Lo que les hice a mis padres... y lo que ellos nos hicieron a mĂ y mis hermanos... fue tan terrible que tuve que convertirme en alguien peor que ellos, padre Álvarez. Y cuando vaya al infierno y los encuentre... ÂĄvolverĂ© a hacerlo todo otra vez!” (What I did to my parents
and what they did to me and my siblings
was so terrible that I had to become someone worse than them, Father Álvarez. And when I go to hell and find them
I’ll do it all over again!) The bald priest, used to her by now, just listened, resisting the urge to roll his eyes — she repeated this confession three times a day. “El dĂa que le di una paliza a mi abogado en el tribunal... pensĂ© que nunca volverĂa a ver la luz del dĂa. Pero entonces Fantine, Justine y Jenny vinieron a visitarme... Fantine trajo mi fortalecedor de puños... Juzz apareciĂł, mi Ășnica amiga... y Jenny hablĂł de una rivalidad que solo existĂa en su cabeza
” (The day I beat up my lawyer in court
I thought I’d never see the light of day again. But then Fantine, Justine, and Jenny came to visit me
 Fantine brought my fist trainer
Juzz showed up, my only friend
and Jenny talked about a rivalry that existed only in her head
) The priest allowed himself a faint smile. “Cuando toquĂ© la mano de Jenny a travĂ©s del cristal... me di cuenta de que no me habĂan olvidado. TodavĂa se preocupan por mĂ.” (When I touched Jenny’s hand through the glass
I realized they hadn’t forgotten me. They still care about me.) “How sweet, Sister Jezebel
” “Actually, the visit gave me so much hope
” She began playing soft melodies on the organ, “that I decided to show them the most precious thing in my life, Father Álvarez.” “Eh?” The Alley Cat of JuĂĄrez smiled mysteriously, letting the music fill the chapel. On the way to Jeff Hyman High, traffic was a nightmare. Jenny and Fantine were in the flower-painted StreetKa; Ritchie, Juzz, and ChloĂ© in the blue El Camino; and Betty and Hysooz in Heidi’s SUV, blasting metal music. “Just my luck!” Jenny complained, honking. “It’s Sunday, eight a.m., and the traffic’s already like this!” “Tell me about it
” Fantine cleaned her glasses. “The Big Apple has no space left for the little ‘worms’ living in it
” “Not now, Captain!” Jenny interrupted. In the other car, ChloĂ© was laughing at a video on her phone. “Please, ChloĂ©!” Justine tried to look away, making an awful face. “My old PE videos are so embarrassing!” “But they’re what made me your fan, Juzz!” On the screen, Juzz gave commands while recruits struggled through push-ups. By the time she counted to 200, some were so exhausted they had wet their uniforms. ChloĂ© couldn’t stop laughing, while the “star” of the video hid under her blue wool hat. “Sorry, Justine, but I love this video!” “Ugh
 each to their own
” After an hour and a half in traffic, they finally arrived. Jenny swiped her card at the gate and turned off the security monitor. “Let’s enter through the front, but quietly,” she instructed. Like spies, Jenny laid out the plan: “The sunrise is long gone, so we’ll use the cameras. I’ll monitor from here; ChloĂ©, Juzz, and Betty — head to the library. Stick close to the biggest window, just like Jezzie wrote. Wait for my signal.” “Hope we won’t need any tools
” Justine murmured. They stepped into the spacious library. Dust danced in the air, carrying the scent of varnish and damp books. Portraits of headmasters looked down around a central painting of Jeff Alden Hyman — the man who tried to redeem the school’s dark history. In the office, the others watched ChloĂ©, Justine, and Betty via the live feed. “I still can’t believe the story Jenny told, Mermaid!” said Betty, fanning her face, dripping from the Devil’s Advocate shake. “Who knew this place used to be an illegal slaughterhouse!” “At least now the smell of blood in carpentry class makes sense
” “Yeah
we thought someone had lost a finger there
” “Library, quiet, Betty!” ChloĂ© cut her off — as if she weren’t the first to be kicked out for talking too loud. “Focus, ladies!” Jenny barked through Bluetooth. “ChloĂ©, back to the window. I’m almost at the right moment in the footage
 almost
 almost
BINGO!” On the monitor, the first beam of sunlight hit exactly the spot Jezzie had marked with an X. Far away, Jezebel stopped playing the organ and closed her eyes. A warm sensation coursed through her body, as if someone had lit a candle inside her. She smiled slowly. “La encuentraran
” Father Álvarez raised an eyebrow, confused. “What did you say?” “Nada, padre
” she replied, resuming her playing. “Nada
 por encuanto.”
