CENTRE EXTENDS DEADLINE FOR MANIPUR VIOLENCE INQUIRY COMMISSION TILL MAY 2026
The Union government has extended the tenure of the Commission of Inquiry investigating the 2023 Manipur ethnic violence until May 20, 2026, as per an official notification issued on December 16, 2025. Headed by former Gauhati High Court Chief Justice Ajai Lamba, the three-member panel is examining the causes, spread, and administrative lapses related to the violence that began on May 3, 2023, leaving around 260 people dead and thousands displaced. The extension marks the fifth time the deadline has been revised, as the commission continues to assess accountability, review preventive measures, and examine complaints linked to the unrest, which followed protests over a High Court recommendation on ST status for the Meitei community.
