Killing D&D Characters

@sirjimby7107

I always tell my players that if their characters die and they really want to continue playing that character, there exist ways within the world that would allow them to continue their journey as that character. They always have some level of consequence but it offers players a way to continue their characters personal journey.

death is a very strong storytelling tool. it can either make the story a lot better or a lot worse

@SylviusTheMad

Killing? No. Letting die? Absolutely.

I have been obsessed with one-day doing the skit that the one guy did where the players wake up in avernus and his buddy says "We've got Hell to raise."

I always ask my players. Some just get attached to their characters, and that's entirely valid. It also allows for me, as a DM, to craft far more interesting plots for party members.

@thod-thod

Only if the players have made mistakes. Not otherwise. Certainly not “I feel like the story demands a death soonish.”

How I would run it Character: dies Me: As the body falls to the ground, an ancient ritual circle forms and drops the body to the depths of the underworld

@nugget0928

Never had it happen to me before, but I will forever respect the first one to do so.

Character deaths show consequences but also can give your players a greater narrative to stop the evil that did it it doesn't have to just be sad it can be a badass moment

No one wants to die but we all want to be remembered.

I think it depends a lot on the players emotional connection to their character. If someone is very attached to the char they are playing, I would try my best to let them keep that character as long as possible

As a player I love to have my characters to die after a hard battle, both because I like the grim storytelling, I like challenge and thus my optimization to be put to the test, and finally I easily grow bored of one character after 5 or 6 sessions. However, since it would often be difficult to justify story wise, I never ask my DM to kill off my characters. Usually I stick to them for longer than what I'd normally prefer and don't even tell my dm about it.

You lose all of the stakes if the characters are immortal (Except the Barbaarian with 400 HP)

Here's the thing: it depends. Talk with your players, see what they prefer. There are always fates other than death and methods to bring characters back in a way that enriches the story!

@Sarge1886

I’ve always operated with the understanding that, while I’ll try not to target a particular player, I will not stop or save you from your own stupidity.

@yldan.

Nay if the characters have a story the players genuinely care about seeing through to the end Yay if otherwise

@BreezeTheCat

i have intentional tried to off characters at times with some large thing to make a statement but they live and then they nearly die to a black pudding

Permanent character death is something that should be warned about and coordinated with the player for maximum effectiveness. It feels like sh*t to die out of nowhere and have it not feel satisfying. It feels incredible to know you're gonna die and have it be a massive and climactic moment for the game.
