Can You Forget a Language?

Languages donโ€™t disappear, they just wait to be revived. I believe that with the right motivation, familiar content, and enough time spent listening and reading, you can pick up right where you left off. There is also no need to maintain every language daily, just let them rest and return when youโ€™re ready.

Have you ever gone back to a language after a long break? What was your experience like?

When I was a little boy, I could speak Turkish fluently (my mother tongue is Uzbek) 'cause I watched a lot of cartoons, TV-shows in Turkish and we had Turkish channels. I spoke and played with myself in Turkish. Then I started to watch Disney in Russian (so, I'm learning in school where education is in Russian), read a lot of books, watched a lot of films and now I speak Russian fluently, but I can't speak Turkish fluently and try to learn it.

@Poliglot-tutor

I have learned Hindi, Urdu, English and Spanish over the course of 5 years, I have always been straggling with Spanish sine I do not use it much. The way I keep my languages fresh is by listening to music and following news, it works for me because I like news and music so much. News and music keeps me engage and teach me new things, so I have learned from personal experience that for learning language or reviving it best thing is to follow the things that is interesting and fun.

I started learning Italian in 2002-2003, but after moving out of NYC, I abandoned it because I didn't have access to classes or a tutor. In 2022, I started again. I'm feeling frustrated now because I'm at the point where the more I learn, the less I actually know. Hello, il congiuntivo! ๐Ÿ˜‚
