Well, I didn't exactly find my answer among the 4 on offer, so here's mine: intervals within chord shapes. I'd been playing open and barre chords for 30 years. I knew the shapes, but had never bothered to learn what the names of the notes were. I know that a Gmaj chord contains the notes G-B-D, but I didn't know which note was on which string (or being fretted by which finger) until my guitar teacher made me learn the intervals within each chord shape, there being 2 basic patterns: E-, A-, and D-shapes are 1-5-1-3-5-1, C- and G-shapes are 1-3-5-1-3-1. Knowing which string is which chord tone really helps me musically.

Gotta be scales. The root of everything begins with the major scale, I think. Learn that, you can build chords and everything else from there! Love Chris’s channel!

Knowing all the notes and how the intervals harmonize. It does always come back to the scales. It's all worth it. Rock on

There's something exciting about learning a new chord shape or progression in a song that tends to lose my interest when explained outside of that context.

Simple triads combined with basic scales. Then with 7ths chords everything clicked.
