This lens seems to be getting fewer views on every channel I've looked at. Including me. Poorly performing lens review. I'm curious why? Sony shooters, this lens not really that interesting for y'all? I know that Sony has like 5000 lenses now. What kinda lens would get you excited these days?

@jackbcasey

It’s not even that it’s niche, we just know what to expect. Auto focus is great, it’s light, it’s wide, etc.

For me, Sony G lenses seem so consistent that they’re almost not worth watching unless I’m about to press the buy button on one and want to make sure there’s no glaring errors I’m missing. Every video is kinda “the features are the same, super sharp, fix the distortion and focus breathing with profiles”. I’d be more likely to watch a “battle of the super compact wide angles” video or something in that vein that highlights how much lighter/smaller/faster/more expensive it is than its closest competitors.

This lens felt like a product solution to a problem that didn’t exist. Sony already had multiple lenses in their lineup that covered the 16mm focal length, and those that needed more light than f/2.8 could offer probably went and got either the 14mm GM or the Sigma 1.4 offerings. The niche that this lens covers seems exceptionally small. Sony seemed to take the same approach/mindset with the 16-25mm f/2.8 and I felt the same way. I think Sony’s next move should be refreshing their original budget line of FF lenses, like the 35mm f/1.8 and the 85mm f/1.8. Ironically those lenses are still great buys today even with their age, but revamping them with newer AF motors and maybe aperture rings would be a nice touch. Especially in the case of the 35 1.8, if they could find a way to make that lens even more compact while maintaining optical quality, that would be an incredible travel prime lens.

@AZ-hm2or

Never reached into my bag thinking “if only I had a 16mm…”

@nitram4242

Probably because I have zero need for a Sony photo lens. Personally, I'll like to see Cine autofocus lenses from the likes of DZOfilm, Nisi, Meike, Laowa etc. Lenses with some character and nice focus fall off, but with the convenience of autofocus. Sigma seems to be coming up with something, but i want more!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Lol

@SeansCreativeStudio

I would buy a 24-70mm, 70-200mm, 100mm macro, 85mm 1.2, 50mm 1.2, 35mm 1.4 and a 16-35mm before considering this. Also if Im using a small setup for street photography, I'd sooner jump at any of 20, 24, 28, 35, 40mm before this, because street stuff is far away. If I needed a small setup (but full frame) for a trip to see the northern lights, or for a lightweight landscape kit, I'd look at this lens and consider it. But I don't know how many people that applies to, when the versatility of a lens holds so much power on someone's wallet.

@findwill

I actually love that they are releasing this lens - need more fast wide primes in the mix

@jimogden1506

I have the 16-35, so the 16 isn't needed in my bag. Something wider or an upgrade to the 200-600 would definitely get me interested.

A 35-150 f2-2.8 from Sony. Smaller and with OSS!

I’m not shooting Sony anymore, but could adapt a good ultra wide angle light and fast prime like this on my Nikon Z cameras, but 16mm is a bit tight for real estate video! 14mm would’ve been great.

@aaronlarue

I think the Viltrox 16 MM is more compelling for the bang for buck

This is actually the first lens that I was eagerly waiting for reviews to drop. Have been looking to pick up a compact ultrawide, and wasn't sold on the 16-25/2.8.

@williamwong9117

Something slightly wider on the 24-70 2.8, maybe 20-70, would be great as a hybrid lens with the wider end dealing better with the crop on dynamic stabilizing modes.

@fwfeo

Give us a 14mm/1.8 with similar weight and no distortion, I’d be very tempted to buy one for my Nikon Z cameras! 😂

Super compact 24-70mm F2.8

@feederbrian9457

Bit absurd, but a 0.95 internal autofocus would be fun to see

@DKALVV

New compact 35mm much more needed, with f2.0 at least

@Holmaaron

Bare bones but fast super tele zoom would be cool.

@fwfeo

Sony needs to cover the 14-30 range better. We have 12-24 then 16-35 Canon has 14-35 and 15-35 which in real estate terms canon has a much better coverage in one lens. 12 is way too wide for 99.5% or the time and 24mm is too short for vignettes and detail shots. 14-35 is the best range to cover for a jack of all trades lens real estate!

@Tardsmat

I might be in the minority but I'm really curious about the sigma 16-300. I know superzooms have a bad reputation but I think with modern lens technology they are a lot better, and it looks like that lens would be so fun as a travel video lens. From what I saw it can probably resolve 4k video very well.
