Do you think Windows 10 EOL will push more users to switch to Linux? Why?

@Authustian

I am one who has been pushed. for the last ~8 months i've been using (and learning) linux on my main pc and laptop. as an intel/nvida guy i had a few challenges, but once i got things working it's been fantastic - i can't imagine going back. Oh, and i use arch btw ;)

Some, but not many. There are problems that can’t be solved by switching like the fact the public remains steadfastly ignorant and that some people need applications they can’t replace. That said, some will come and some that come will stay. As Linux grows in popularity it will become more known and so attract more users which will make it more known. It’s just not big enough yet for that to make much of a difference.

@KuruGDI

Yes, but not in significant numbers. People rather stay in the hell they know than go into the unknown. I can remember my experiences when I switched that would have me made switch back to Windows if I wasn't sure I wanted to stay on Linux.

@scheimong

A small percentage I imagine. But a small percentage of the Windows 10 userbase is still a very decent amount.

The end of Windows 10 made me try out Linux (Fedora + KDE) on my main rig once more. Linux on a server is great, but on Desktop it was a huge adventure for me. My biggest issue is still how horrible network drive support seems to be. My NAS worked fine and fast under Windows but under Linux I got it to work well enough with sshfs, but the speed is horrible. Gaming on the other hand works really well and I got even better Performance in some games compared to Windows. All in all, it works well but it definitely has alot to improve.

The average person doesn't understand how to install a different operating system. It will only happen if people actually help them to do it, and most of those people will think Linux is too much for them I would think.

@nickdonathan

Pewdiepie did it. Some people will switch just to have something current on their PC, but I feel like people like him switching will have the most meaningful impact.

@guguludugulu

It will push more users, but not as many as some would expect

@ninjarunner

Some will, but only people who are aware of the option/need to so. Most will either get a new computer, if they're aware of the EOL, or just continue running windows 10, unaware/uncaring of the fact it's not receiving updates.

@jordanb2812

Some will, but history has shown most people won't. They'll either stay on Windows 10 until their computer breaks, or upgrade to Windows 11.

It pushed me to it last year The only games I played on windows that I can’t play on linux are ones I’ll just play on a console instead Microsoft has nothing to keep me interested, and my machines can run 11 (Arch gang)

I know it has for at least one non tech person in my life. Her laptop constantly asked her upgrade Windows 11, but it doesn’t meet the requirements, so the warning never goes away. I told her we can just throw Linux on there and not worry about it anymore and she was cool with it.

@dingokidneys

Most Windows users will need a Linux evangelist to turn them on to the fact that this is possible, that it is not that hard and to help them install a Linux distro on their machine as well as provide some initial hand holding. The number of Linux evangelists who are willing to take on this role for one or more family/friends is limited so I think there will be some kind of up-bump for Linux on the graph but not that big a bump.

@riley3269

They will stay on 10 because they don’t know it’s bad not to get security updates

I say some. Most of the general public don't think they have a choice. I went to Linux 4 years ago. Once win 11 came out and Microsuck started becoming obnoxious with trying to force windows accounts, I decided to challenge myself to start daily driving a new pc in 2021 with Manjaro. Later to learn more, I went to Arch (great learning experience once you get familiar with an easier distro. Really lets you see what all goes into a distro) Once I was able to finally manage to get an AMD GPU, I never had a need to try and go back, except for tax software. Letting the wife keep a win 11 laptop for the oddball software. Win 11 is so obnoxious I don't even wanna run it in a vm. The general windows user will do just fine on a distro like Mint and never notice a difference for every day use. Even Libre Office is a decent substitute for Microsuck Office, especially since MS is trying to shut down any use of VBA automation.

There’ll be a few who move….but not enough to move the needle on desktop Linux adoption. As easy as it is to install a mainstream Linux distribution these days (at least for most of us who are somewhat tech savy) most normal folks (in my experience at least) find that task daunting. Also there is the software issue, ie linux and windows programs aren’t cross compatible (at least in most cases). Wine is a thing….but ask folks who find installing an operating system daunting to figure out how to use wine is not gonna happen.

unless it's a preinstalled OS on computers, it wont see much adoption until it's an option when people buy new. but imagine giving people a headache by giving them a choice.

Pushed me. Daily driving Pop!_OS Cosmic alpha on Nvidia. Smooth, stable, great software, no regrets.

Some will move. People like my bro and two buddies who have been sitting on the fence for a few years. They said they aren't going to get Win11 and since I've been doing well on Linux for years, they're swapping. We're all kids of MS-DOS 3.2 so CLI isn't a boogeyman. 😉 But that being said, I think most will just keep doing what they've always done. Mainly not having a clue, some might grumble but suck it, some don't care

Not enough to make any noticeable dent. We see it cause we are in the communities that sees some people asking questions but just our biases.
