The teachings of Christ aren’t for quitters. He didn’t give abstract ponderings. He gave hard specifics.
Christ didn’t say, “Love humanity.” He said, “Love your enemies and do good to those who hate you.”
He didn’t say, “Do what makes you happy.” He said, “It is better for you to enter into life with one eye, rather than having two eyes, to be cast into hell.”
He didn’t say, “Try to be a nice person.” He said, “If anyone would come after me, let him *deny himself* and take up his cross and follow me.”

We need the grace of God to follow God.
