I try to view movies on their own terms, and don't try to constantly compare them with other movies, especially movies that share the same name. It's also worth pointing out that I haven't seen the 1941 film in so long, I barely remember anything about it.
I actually enjoyed this film! I felt like it was at its strongest when it was blazing new ground, and doing things I'd never seen before. My favorite parts were when they went to Dreamland and showed off all sorts of retro-futuristic stuff and art-deco architecture.
The movie wasn't perfect, and I actually thought that the titular character was one of the weakest parts. I loved seeing Danny DeVito and Michael Keaton playing off one another.
I know people love to hate (ironic) on all the live-action remakes of animated features, but I think their hate is overblown. Most of the ones I've seen have been at the very least, fine. Some of them I think are actually quite good. This one leans more towards being fine, but is nowhere near as bad as the worst, being the 2019 Lion King.
I doubt I'll change anyone's opinions by sharing mine, but there you have it. I enjoyed Dumbo (2019).
