Late to the party on this one, but answering your question about why Renoir attacked the village - there’s fallen Sakapatate all over the Forgotten Battleground, and even north of that, around Monoco’s Station (there are even a few Grandis in the Battleground, too). I wonder if Renoir attacked them in response to their alliance with Expeditioners. He’s always trying to protect and defend the Paintress, so I wonder if some of the deaths can be attributed to him (along with the Duellist), and attacking the village was an attempt to eradicate the Gestrals? No more Gestrals, no more alliance. This also could explain why there are so many pockets of Gestrals scattered everywhere - such as the Night Sanctuary. If they were escaping a genocide, it would make sense that some of them would settle in other places. Sorry that was long 😅 But those were my thoughts

Not directly related to the village. I think Monocco is the only smart gestral because he didn't die yet. Every other gestral (except maybe Golgra) died at least once so they lose intelligence in the process of rebirth
