The Christian Channel
This verse captures the heart of the entire story of Joseph and Mary. When the angel Gabriel appeared to Mary with an impossible message that she, a virgin, would conceive the Son of God the natural human response would be fear, doubt, or refusal. But Mary, after asking only “How?”, answered with radical faith: “Be it unto me according to thy word.” She did not demand complete proof. She did not ask for guarantees of safety. She simply trusted that if God was speaking, nothing would be impossible. That same faith sustained Joseph when a dream told him to protect a pregnant woman carrying a child that was not his. It sustained them both through scandal, exile, massacre, and decades of silent waiting. The story of Joseph and Mary teaches us that God does not require our full understanding only our trusting obedience.
