Maybe not a full on license, but I feel like there should be atleast some sort of mandatory course (like basics of dog ownership/care)

I think it shouldn't be required HOWEVER I think it defo SHOULD be easier to remove dogs from people that are mistreating them. We had neighbours that neglected their dogs but took nearly 4 years before they did 'enough' neglect to get them rescued

I'm not sure a license is really anything but a way to gain revenue for the local government. Sure they might be able to take it away, but I doubt anyone would check all that often. I do think doggy school would be a great requirement, though. There's a lot of ill socialized and trained dogs and I think that doesn't do them any favors.

not necessarily a license but if a person has a record of violence then they shouldn't be allowed a pet? like a database of sorts. and maybe a government certified class someone could take to learn how to take care of/help train a pet for little to no fee.

It depends but atleast someone should check if they would be a good owner and give the dogs their needs

Sure some sort of free licensing so as not to interfere with ones personal finance. A solid month course in dog care, a no cost license afterwards and a layman's understanding on signed paper should do the trick. A quiet way of allowing dog owners to be more responsible for care and best of all have full accountability for any maltreatment period

No licence is required to give love. The problem is the scum bums who mistreat animals or those that teach them to fight/ just breed them for £££. If we don't licence Humans & we should just like those on pedal bikes who need & should have 1 but don't. We can't continue to limit & restrict their animal rights to have puppies as well as what breeds we'll allow (cause of these people) we should however make them accountable & responsable for their pets Fullstop. Including all those with toy & little dogs that are allowed to scream & shout at everyone. These are those that should have a license as the pets wellbeing is never of concern otherwise there would be some steps taken to improve the dogs quality of life special if their scared of other dogs. The amount of Good Loving homes the dogs will miss out on us ridiculous. Specially as the old neighbour who moved out January 25 left with her boyfriend and 2 kids from her boyfriends granny's house whom the family put into care home since 2009 & left her adult son in there. The girlfriend of the nephew came with 1 dog & 4 cats 2 years ago, she/ left with the 2 dogs & 2 kids & left/ abandoned all 4 cats. Only moved 5 minutes away. She would have the 2nd dog outside barking all day from 5am straight upto whenever it got tired as well as sending its annoying boy outside in winter in a pull up nappy pants so it could jump & scream daily on the trampoline. These are the people who need a licence to own animals and keep their children. Those who enjoy smoking over their children should always be looked at as passive smoking is more harmful than actual smoking yet socially it's acceptable to watch mothers openly smoking over their kids.

Something to ensure dogs are not bred or abandoned randomly. 😢 Having said that, the above sentence takes it for granted that the government would care enough to penalize those who breed unethically or abandon. I can't really say that could be the case with governments, all over the world, unfortunately, that allow animal testing, and so on.😢

Just like a driving licence for owners. Show you are capable with the responsibility of owning and caring for a dog. If you own multiple dogs, a proficiency test could suffice. All dogs should be microchipped, surely that equates to a licence. However, puppy classes, canine first aid and ongoing development should be every owners responsibility.

A law so be brought in if you are cruel to animals you should be charged. In Ireland where I am a few people have been charged for cruelty. You should have a license to own any animal.

In N Ireland we already have to have a license, tho it’s largely a paper exercise with no course etc underpinning it.

It's difficult enough to adopt a dog. If you go to RSPCA Manchester, it's a nightmare. Can I look around and meet dogs to try and find a connection? No. Can I get a reply to my enquiries about dogs? No. Can I come in and talk about my application? No. There's already too many hurdles as it is. It's already very stressful. It's an obstacle to good owners as well as bad, and I doubt it would be free

No because like as long as they take care of it properly and don't abuse it, they should be fine.

You used to have to have dog licences years ago. People still won't get one though, the same as they don't get their dogs chipped. X

We have so many strays in our neighborhood bc people dump their pets when they're "done" with them. People need to understand the commitment they make when they own an animal. Nobody said you have to baby them (although I think they deserve it) but they aren't toys to be thrown away bc they don't work out or they're too energetic or whatever. Do your own research to find out EXACTLY what you could be getting into before getting any pet

No! Government doesn't need to be in everything, probably shouldn't be in most of what they already are! Should you be a responsible pet owner, of course. But I understand the idea, hell most can't/won't are don't understand how to raise their Damned kids! 😮
