Just Write

Hi all! My next video is a deep-dive on all of the shows trying to be "the next Game of Thrones" (aka "Thrones Clones") and also a study/theory/reflection on creative influence in general? It is certainly *a video.* A 42 minute one! You can watch it right now, ad-free, on my Patreon: tinyurl.com/57wzusry

There's also a bunch of bonus videos over there too that are Patreon-exclusive, like reviews of Dune, Deadpool and Wolverine, Foundation Season 2 and a big ramble about the Clone Wars. So click buttons! And send this to 10 blood relatives within 7 days or you'll be cursed for 7 years, with every morning feeling a bit like a Monday.

It's good to know you're still here for the non-patrons. I know you post stuff on Patreon regularly, but we had a bit of a drought here.

The RoP showrunners are way out of their depth, and the best example of that is how they wrote Galadriel. They took one of the mightiest and fairest of all elves in Tolkien's world and turned her into an angsty brat without a single diplomatic bone in her body. Personally I don’t blame Morfydd Clark. Following up Cate Blanchett is a thankless task at the best of times, and Clark was handicapped by mediocre writing. Forget about sewing silk purses out of sow ears. This is like making a silk purse out of pig slop.

I really enjoyed RoP! I found it entertaining and my main quibbles with it were more filmmaking/editing focused (and even then pretty nitpicky).

Excited to see this! Rings of Power is a great example as it is definitely trying to capture the success of Game of Thrones while being so fundamently different. I love RoP so very excited to see your take!

Dude in ways, you are fuckin brilliant. Like the variations of perception on how you see the ITS RIGHT THERE IN FRONT OF YOU. Me, sadly so, same paint same story. Did I catch you... doubtful. But as a fan of your clarity in perception, despite yourself, what's the hardest part of your thoughts on Dune. It isn't as if you aren't qualified. Lastly out what could be "what" do keep up the best of your work. It's done quite well. Thank You A

I'm giving RoP a 5/10. Season 2 was better than season 1, but it's still mostly average television. I'm curious about how well they'll do going forward without their Kylo-Ren-esque character.

I really don’t feel TROP is trying to be the next GOT. It looks like it takes after the original movie series a lot and avoids the complex political intrigue that made GOT so iconic. We got a taste of dwarves vs elves (which was also heavily in The Hobbit) but it doesn’t take over the series. GOT was driven by character vendettas and politics…I feel like anything even slightly medieval is forced to be compared to GOT and it’s getting tired.

@aaronclift

I’m not sure why a new series would want to emulate “Game of Thrones” given how GOT’s awful ending makes the series feel pointless in retrospect. Creating a series that sums up to “everyone was horrible, and they all died” is definitely a way to alienate an audience unless everything about the series is handled masterfully (it sure wasn’t in GOT’s when they ran out of book material to adapt). So far, Disney “Star Wars” has managed to go down the same path as GOT but with poorer execution with movies like “The Last Jedi” and “The Rise of Skywalker” and shows like “The Acolyte.”
