THE BIRTH OF ROCK n ROLL
The LP still has a long road to travel as it strives to find its place as the foremost outlet for an artists’ recorded works, but the format really begins to build momentum as the 1950s progress. In the summer of '51 DJ and music promoter Alan Freed broadcasts his first Rhythm and blues radio programme from station WJW in Cleveland, Ohio. He uses the term rock and roll to describe R&B, in an effort to introduce the music to a broader white audience – but there would no sign of an actual Rock n Roll / Rockabilly LP for a few years yet.
The Folk Music revival continues to grow, and Harry Smith's remarkable 5 disc anthology plays a big part in this. Artists such as Jean Ritchie, Peggy Seeger and Ewan MacColl explore these traditional roots, and all of this fire-stoking will go some way to igniting flames on both sides of the Atlantic in the decade which follows.
Bill Haley and his Comets release the first Rock n Roll LP in 1954, and by 1958 American Rock n Roll dominates rebel sensibilities. For me, it’s Little Richard who delivers the first masterpiece album in '57, and he has fine genre company from Bo Diddley, Jerry Lee Lewis, Duane Eddy, Carl Perkins, Chuck Berry, Gene Vincent, Eddie Cochran, Buddy Holly and The Crickets.
