What are the best toys to help baby crawl—and how should you actually use them? In this video, I demonstrate toys and floor-play setups I use as a pediatric physical therapist to help babies practice reaching, weight shifting, supporting their weight through their hands, and bringing their knees under their hips.
If your baby is commando crawling but struggling to get onto hands and knees, these demonstrations show how toy placement and support can make crawling practice more engaging.
You’ll see how I use:
• A pop-up toy for tummy-time reaching, pivoting, and weight shifting
• An activity cube to encourage early knee tucks
• A foam mat and supported play over my thigh for hands-and-knees practice
• Engaging toys to encourage reaching during supported floor play
• A low toy piano and a controlled push walker for kneeling practice
• A crawling tunnel and obstacles for continued crawling play
The key is choosing a setup that matches the skill your baby is practicing—not simply buying another toy.
I’m Cherrick Gordon, MSPT, a pediatric physical therapist with over 25 years of experience helping infants and toddlers build movement skills.
