Fritz Renger: 3 Pieces, Op.34
Phillip Sear plays a 1911 set of three pieces by the somewhat obscure Bohemian-German composer, organist, choral conductor and music educator Fritz (Friedrich) Renger (1866–1937).
-----------------------------------------------
Born in Deutsch-Kamnitz (Böhmisch-Kamnitz), Renger sang as a boy chorister with the Regensburger Domspatzen and subsequently studied at the Vienna Conservatory. He established his professional career in Werschetz (Vršac), serving as organist and Regenschori at St Gerhard’s Church, and later held a similar position in Pantschowa (Pančevo). His work was shaped by Catholic liturgical practice, German-speaking choral culture and the musical institutions of the multi-ethnic South-Eastern European Habsburg successor region.
Renger seems to have written little for piano solo and his wider output was predominantly vocal and functional. It included songs, Männerchöre (male voice choruses), sacred choral pieces such as ‘Improprien’, ‘Popule meus’ and ‘Tui sunt coeli’, and the 1913 'Kirchen-Liederbuch', compiled for congregational singing at the Werschetz Roman Catholic parish and published by Breitkopf & Härtel in Leipzig. He also composed the 1920 ‘Festgesang der deutschen Hochschulverbindung Banatia’ for voice and piano.
