Is your baby commando crawling or army crawling across the floor but still not getting up onto hands and knees? In this video, I’ll show you how to help your baby crawl on hands and knees by working on the specific skills that may still be missing.
As a pediatric physical therapist, I usually look at three things first: can baby push the chest up with straight arms, bring the knees underneath the hips, and shift weight from side to side enough to free one arm and one leg at a time? If one of those pieces is missing, your baby may move really well on their tummy but still have trouble transitioning into hands-and-knees crawling.
In this video, I demonstrate several crawling exercises and progressions, including:
• Modified baby push-ups
• Tummy time pivoting and weight shifting
• Assisted knee tucks
• Rocking on hands and knees
• Elevated hands-and-knees practice
• Tall kneeling progression
• Assisted crawling one arm and one leg at a time
• Crawling over a cushion or parent’s leg
These exercises are designed to help babies transition from commando crawling or army crawling into crawling on hands and knees by improving arm support, knee positioning, weight shifting, and coordination.
If your baby is commando crawling but can’t get their belly off the floor yet, keep practicing and give them plenty of opportunities to explore movement. Some babies stay in a belly-crawling pattern longer before they are ready to transition up onto hands and knees.
