Baby canât crawl yet? Weak arms and upper-body strength may be one reason. In this episode of the BabyMasterPT Crawling Show, pediatric physical therapist Cherrick Gordon, MSPT shows you how to tell whether your babyâs arms may be the weak linkâand 5 crawling exercises you can use to gradually build the strength needed for hands-and-knees crawling.
For a baby to crawl on hands and knees, the arms, core, and legs have to work together. If your baby struggles to push their chest off the floor, collapses through their arms on hands and knees, or falls when trying to reach with one hand, upper-body strength may still be developing.
In this video, youâll learn how to help your baby crawl by progressing through five exercises:
Tummy Time Push-Ups â Build early pushing strength through the hands and arms.
Tummy Time Pivoting â Practice shifting weight onto one arm while the other arm moves.
Early Baby Plank Over Your Leg â Gradually increase the amount of body weight your baby supports through their arms.
Seated Baby Push-Ups â Practice active pushing and elbow extension from a different position.
Hands-and-Knees Weight Shifting â Build the one-arm support your baby eventually needs to move each hand forward during crawling.
If your baby is not crawling at 10 months, age alone doesn't tell us why. I like to look at the underlying skills needed for crawlingâincluding upper-body strength, core stability, leg strength, weight shifting, and the ability to support the body on hands and knees.

đ¶ NEXT EPISODE: If your baby's arms are getting stronger but your baby still won't crawl, the next thing to check is leg strength. In the next episode of the BabyMasterPT Crawling Show, I'll show you what I look for and exercises you can use to help strengthen baby's legs for crawling.
