Drifting into view while exploring the midwater column and hovering above the seafloor, gelatinous animals are some of our team’s favorite sightings. These ethereal organisms lack internal body structure, with jellies relying on pulsing bells or ctenophores rapidly moving rows of comb-like cilia to move through the water. Ballooning Deepstaria jellies shapeshift with the currents, Halitrephes jellies dazzle with fireworks-like tentacles, and long chains of colonial siphonophores float and fluoresce in the darkness of the deep sea.
