As its name suggests, the midwater is the section of the ocean located below the surface and above the seafloor. This slice of water is home to billions of different species. In fact, it’s so rich in diversity that organisms found here are believed to outnumber all other animals on Earth.
E/V Nautilus explores the midwater region often while descending to and ascending from the seafloor– and most of the adventure is in the journey! Some of our more memorable highlights have occurred in these “blue waters,” including a sperm whale that hovered around ROV Hercules. Other deep-sea organisms that have come into our camera view include large groupings of squids and crabs as well as elusive sunfish, or Mola mola, translucent ctenophores, and extravagant siphonophore chains.
