Baby Hitch Crawling? Why One Leg Stays Up

🎁 FREE 0–12 Month Baby Milestone Checklist: preview.mailerlite.io/forms/1795021/17644598030395… Is your baby hitch crawling with one leg up and the other knee down? Sometimes that can simply be a preferred crawling pattern, but other times it may be a clue that your baby is using the two sides of the body differently. In this BabyMasterPT video, pediatric physical therapist Cherrick Gordon, MSPT shows you what to look for and the exercises he uses to encourage more even weight shifting and a more symmetrical crawling pattern. Before getting into the exercises, I walk through four quick things I like to assess: • How baby shifts weight from side to side • Whether baby rotates the trunk equally in both directions • How baby uses the hips and legs on each side • What the crawling pattern looks like when viewed from behind Then I demonstrate practical hitch crawling exercises including side-sitting, hands-and-knees weight shifting, reaching across the body, crawling over an obstacle, tall kneeling play, assisted crawling with the knee guided forward, and supported lunges to encourage more equal use of both legs. The goal is not simply to push the raised leg down. It is to help baby practice more even weight bearing, better trunk rotation, and more symmetrical use of the hips and legs during crawling. If your baby can already get up on hands and knees and rock front to back but still won’t start crawling forward, that’s the next problem we’ll tackle in the BabyMasterPT Crawling Series.
