Baby Crawling Backwards? Here's Why

Is your baby crawling backwards but not forward yet? Sometimes babies push strongly through their arms, but the legs are not yet bringing the knees forward underneath the body. That can cause baby to slide backwards even when they are trying to reach a toy in front of them. In this video, I’ll show you how to help your baby crawl forward by practicing the specific movements that support forward crawling on hands and knees. As a pediatric physical therapist, I use activities that help babies strengthen the legs, bring the knees under the hips, shift weight from side to side, and coordinate the arms and legs more effectively. You’ll see several crawling exercises and progressions, including: • Commando froggy crawling • Double-leg and single-leg push-offs • Lying leg press exercises • Sit-to-crawl transitions • Supported hands-and-knees practice • Front-to-back weight shifting • Tummy time pivoting • Assisted knee positioning • Crawling over a parent’s leg or small obstacle • Froggy crawling for forward propulsion link.amazon/B0e4GcMrJ These activities are designed to help a baby who is crawling backwards learn how to use the legs more effectively and begin bringing the knees forward underneath the body. The goal is to help baby practice the coordination needed for forward crawling rather than simply pushing backward through the arms. If your baby is crawling backwards right now, keep giving them opportunities to practice pushing through both the arms and legs, bringing the knees underneath the hips, and moving toward something they really want. Backward crawling can happen while baby is still learning how to coordinate all of those pieces together for forward movement. 🎁 FREE 0–12 Month Baby Milestone Checklist: preview.mailerlite.io/forms/1795021/17644598030395… If your baby is mostly commando crawling on their tummy and you’re wondering how to help them transition up onto hands and knees, watch the next video in my Baby Crawling series.
