Pouring with Acrylics (Pouring Medium)

Pouring is a technique of applying paint in a liquid form without brushes. Acrylic color is mixed with a fluid medium to create smooth even puddles. My favorite medium for this technique is Liquitex's Pouring Medium, because it dries clear, doesn't yellow and is non-crazing. Crazing occurs if you try to use gloss medium for this. It's simply when the top layer of the poured puddles dries more quickly than the body of the puddles and the top splits apart creating a rivulet effect. If you don't want to have this happen, you must use a non-crazing medium. If you like this effect, most any gloss fluid medium will do - such as a glazing medium or gloss medium or blending medium. Because of the aggregates in matte medium, I have found it to also be non-crazing. However, it dries cloudy because of those same aggregates so if you need a clear or transparent puddle, use pouring medium.
