In this playlist -The story of medieval England - I have included talks not just from the Middle Ages but also from Anglo Saxon history and the Dark Ages.
So you will find talks about such events as the Peasants Revolt, the Battle of Hastings (& William the Conqueror), and the bloody battle of Shrewsbury alongside stuff from before the Norman Conquest.
Anglo Saxon history was, for a period of 200 years, a never ending battle between the English and Viking invaders.
In the 860's the Great Heathen Army (led by the sons of the legendary Ragnar Lothbrok) landed in England.
As they rampaged through England they met Edmund, King of East Anglia, in battle.
You can find out what happened in my short talk about St. Edmund the Martyr.
Later on, the English under Alfred the Great started to hold their own and then push the Vikings back.
It was now that England's uncrowned queen - Aethelflaed Lady of the Mercians arrives in British history (only to be be conveniently forgotten by the monks writing the history of Wessex and England because she was both a woman and threatening to eclipse her brother, Edward the Elder).
You will find a short video all about the Lady of Mercia in this playlist.
In my collection of video talks that I release each week, their are many stories from medieval England including the dynastic disaster when the White Ship sank, Edward I's expulsion of England's Jews, and the Welsh fight for independence under Owain Glyndwr.
Over the coming months I will be recording more talks on medieval England including the Wars of the Roses and Alfred The Great.
