Barcarolle collection

Phillip Sear plays a selection of barcarolles—boat songs (or sometimes, more specifically, Venetian gondola songs), a popular 19th century genre. "Barcarolles in classical music are musical pieces that evoke the gentle rocking motion of a gondola on water. Originating as folk songs sung by Venetian gondoliers, barcarolles are characterized by a flowing 6/8 meter and a moderate tempo. They often feature a lyrical melody and a gently swaying accompaniment, creating a sense of calm and tranquillity. Composers like Chopin, Offenbach, and Mendelssohn have all composed beautiful barcarolles that capture the essence of these Venetian boat songs, transporting listeners to the serene canals of Venice." (Gemini, 1/12/24). This selection includes some non-Venetian barcarolles, invoking boats on water elsewhere, but generating the same atmosphere.
