I'm a nutritionist on a ACL recovery journey. On March 10, 2025, I completely tore my ACL :( Documenting my recovery and journey so I can remember each step of the way. If you're recovering from an ACL, lets support each other and come back stronger 🄹

My ACL Journey

Nov 26, 2025: I reinjured my knee :( I played drop in volleyball.. and I’ve been feeling tired this week overall. I did an awkward jump backwards and I felt something in my knee pop. Almost like I retore something even though I haven’t had surgery… feeling sad about this. All this hard work. Hoping it’s not that bad. I’m able to walk but my knee is stiffening up. 😭😭😭😭

My ACL Journey

10/30/25 - did isokinetic dynamometer testing from an athletic therapist and my left and right side quads are equal and really strong (apparently 99% percentile of all the people who have tested so far in my general and age)

Didn’t realize how strong my quads are or maybe not many people have used the tests yet lol

My quads were around 685-699N.

The problem was my hamstrings. Despite being in the 89% percentile. Right was a bit weaker than left but significantly weaker than quads (41% as strong as my quads).

Ideally we want at least 50% hamstrings to be as strong as quads and ideally higher for injury prevention.

My hamstrings were around 250-300N.

Need to really work these hamstrings!!!!

My ACL Journey

I just finished a 5km race in 27:05 (7.5 months post ACL injury). I got 8th place in my age category! My last 5km race was in June (When I was only 3 months post injury) and got 33mins. Next race is 10km in April. Lets goooo!

My ACL Journey

I got foot pain from changing my shoes from regular to zero drop, so slowly ease into this (or don't do this at all)! Don't completely switch your footwear during an injury. I find it helpful to have multiple pairs of shoes to switch around as each one is built differently and targets and supports different area of my foot and muscles.

My ACL Journey

Saw my ortho surgeon last week (Sept 23) and he said my knee feels more stable based on those passive tests he did quickly. He said keep up the great work! I asked if I could get another MRI and he should he can order one for me in the new year when he sees me again (Fingers crossed he orders one!!)

My ACL Journey

June 3 - 2nd appointment with ortho surgeon and he says it’s still early and wants to see me again in 2 months. He says it’s about 50% of people can return to sport without surgery, and if going back to high pivoting sport, 80-85% of people will feel great about their results after surgery (if no complications) So he essentially says the decision will be based on what I want to go back to and how my knee stability is.

He can tell my knee is injured but there is a good end point to my knee when he did physical testing.

My ACL Journey

May 12 - physio cleared me to start doing double leg pogo jumps and squat jumps. Really hard mental block to do my first jump

May 27 - physio cleared me to start doing short walk and jogs (30 seconds). He also helped and created cues for me with loading more on my injured leg on any double leg movements as I am naturally loading more on my non injured leg

Still pain from full flexion which he thinks is related to minor swelling still. Pain is behind my knee. Need to think about firing my injured leg quads when doing double leg movements.

He also prefers asymmetrical loading to test stability. However double weighted loading can help build more power on single leg

My ACL Journey

Been looking into footwear lately and realized how I’ve been squishing my wide feet into such small shoes my whole life and now my pinky toe on both foot are really curved in🄲

Can someone explain how my feet is supposed to fit into any regular shoe comfortably?šŸ™ƒ

Even ā€œwideā€ shoe sizes aren’t wide enough for me.

My ACL Journey

I was going to physio weekly but now I’m going to slow down to save money. I realized it’s helpful to go at the pace you’re improving.

I’m starting to see slower progress and less big milestones now that I can walk.

Will continue to build to be stronger and maybe see physio again when I hit a roadblock.

My ACL Journey

1 month, 12 days - Flexion measured at around 120-125 at physio. My extension is not fully there (compared to my other leg) making my walking pattern look off
