Had to make my prediction videos in advance of BAFTA and WGA nominations as I'm currently traveling to London for the upcoming semester! So anyway, here are some quick takeaways:
BAFTA Best Film - No huge surprises. Complete Unknown is SUPER strong but I still don't see it winning anything. Director - Woah, Denis actually got nominated. But it's not enough. Outside of Denis, the rest of the nominations are the 5 people who I still think will get nominated by the Oscars. Actor - No Daniel Craig is hysterical and I'm so rooting for Sebastian Trump Stan to get an Oscar nom I still have Craig getting in over him. Supporting Actress - Glad to see Felicity here. No Monica Barbaro so maybe I was too high on her. Selena gets in but I don't see that translating to the Oscars. But Jamie Lee on the other hand... she's a legit contender now to get in. I think Rosellini is locked in at this point. So it's a battle between Barbaro, Deadwyler, Jones, and Curtis for the final 2 slots. Supporting Actor - I was wrong about Denzel. It's gonna be Clarence Maclin or Jeremy Strong who gets that fifth spot. I'm betting on Maclin right now. Adapted Screenplay - I was right about A Complete Unknown, it's gonna get the Oscar nom.
WGA Original Screenplay - I think I would probably put Challengers over September 5 at this point which is so so exciting. The more Oscar recognition for Challengers the better. Adapted Screenplay - Thank god Dune got in here. I don't think it'll translate to the Oscars, but I'm starting to worry that there's a chance of Dune missing out on Best Picture while A Real Pain, SIng Sing, and Nickel Boys all get in. So this makes me slightly less worried about that possibility.
Anyways, what did you all think of the BAFTA and WGA noms?
I’ve been feeling colder on this year for movies everyday for the past few months but I think this week might change that with Nosferatu, Babygirl, The Brutalist, and Nickel Boys. How have you felt about the films of 2024?
Also Merry Christmas and Happy Hanukkah to all who celebrate!!
In my new Oscar predictions video, I made one glaring mistake when talking about my best actress predictions, claiming Angelina Jolie hasn't been nominated for the award before. I was wrong and conducted poor research. Regardless, she is still yet to win Best Actress so my ranking of her is the same. Sorry for the mix-up!
In the last couple of weeks, I've been uploading my podcast and its clips here but as of today, they have all been moved to our @WhatTheFilmPod YouTube channel. Feel free to go check it out!
Best Picture: Oppenheimer Actor: Cillian Murphy Actress: Emma Stone (Probably Gladstone but I'm going with my gut) Supporting Actress: Da'Vine Joy Randolph Supporting Actor: Charles Melton Young Actor/Actress: Dominic Sessa (Pretty stacked category though) Ensemble: Killers of the Flower Moon Director: Christopher Nolan Original Screenplay: Barbie (Between that and Holdovers for me) Adapted Screenplay: Poor Things Cinematography: Oppenheimer Production Design: Poor Things (Barbie a VERY close second) Editing: Oppenheimer Costume Design: Barbie (Poor Things a VERY close second) Hair/Makeup: Poor Things VFX: Oppenheimer Comedy: The Holdovers (Potential Bottoms upset though?!?!?!) Animated: Spiderverse Foreign Language: Godzilla (Anatomy of a Fall is most likely but they gave it to RRR last year so...) Song: I'm Just Ken Score: Oppenheimer
I just watched Jake Johnson's directorial debut, Self Reliance, on Hulu and it was a pretty good time. His performance was good but his direction made it a lot more interesting. However, the film began to fall a bit flat as the third act came to a close. Do you plan on seeing it? Or if you already have, what were your thoughts??
