On this day in history in 1880 New Yorkers erected a genuine Egyptian obelisk called Cleopatra's Needle. The Obelisk was a gift from the Egyptian Pascha one of two gifted to the US and the UK. The obelisks was constructed about 1425 BCE north of Cairo Egypt. 1,400 years later the Romans found the toppled obelisks and placed them in front of a temple dedicated to Julius Caesar. Today the obelisk is about 3,448 years old.

On this day in history in 1793, King Louis XVI of France was lead up a scaffold where a guillotine awaited him. Before being laid down, he spoke to the crowd saying "'I die innocent of all the crimes laid to my charge; I Pardon those who have occasioned my death; and I pray to God that the blood you are going to shed may never be visited on France.'' Drums rolled as the blade dropped-- severing his head. A guard hoisted the head from the basket and held it before the crowd to cheers of 'Vive la Republique!'' The death of Louis heralded a new, bloody stage in the French Revolution.
