Once ink hits the water, you can’t take it back. Drama works the same way.
.
It usually starts small. Someone shares a rumor at water break. Within ten minutes the whole section is distracted, and the reps get worse.
.
Mature members make one choice: it stops with them. Talk to the person directly, or let it go.

Measure the behaviors that build a great ensemble👇
.
Retention: The fix from last rehearsal still shows up today.
.
Responsiveness: Feedback shows up on the very next rep.
.
Attentiveness: Every knows the instructions the first time.
.
Urgency: Every reset moves with purpose.
.
Accountability: Members and section leaders hold the standard before staff has to.
.
A rehearsal can sound rough and still be a huge win if your members were locked in, adjusting fast, and owning the standard.
.
Challenge your members to chase one of these standards before your next block, and celebrate the small wins when you see them.

Mistakes aren’t the enemy.
Your reaction to them is.
.
When you judge yourself
for making mistakes,
You create frustration,
Which makes improvement even harder.
.
The best performers
don’t panic when they mess up.
Instead, they observe
without judgement.
.
Next time you make a mistake
don’t label it as good or bad.
Just ask yourself “what changed?”
or “what do I adjust?”
.
The less you react
the faster you improve.

3 types of politics slowly dividing your team.
.
When people hear “politics” they think government. Teams have politics too. It shows up when status, fear, and friendships start driving how a team operates instead of what’s best for the team.
.
1. Leadership by seniority. Titles are handed out by grade, not by qualification. You’ll see leaders showing up late to sectionals they’re supposed to run, enjoying the title but disappearing when there’s real work to do, and shutting down underclassmen ideas without discussion.
.
2. Artificial harmony. Nobody feels safe enough to say the hard thing, so they say what keeps the peace. Everyone agrees in the meeting and complains afterward. Feedback is always “good job.” The same mistakes keep repeating and nobody names them.
.
3. Avoiding accountability. People protect their image or their friendships ahead of the standard. Friends get a different set of rules. After a bad run it’s another section’s fault. Nobody says “that’s on me, I’ll fix it.”
.
Every team has some version of this, because every team is made of people, and people want to belong, feel important, and avoid conflict. That part is normal human instinct. How your team responds is what decides whether it grows or stops.
.
If your team is already divided, start here:
.
1) Control what you can control. Own your role and lead by example.
.
2) Stop feeding the drama. When someone brings you gossip, ask if they’ve talked to the person yet.
.
3) Have the honest conversation you’ve been avoiding.
.
Someone has to go first. Let it be you.

Nobody teaches you how to receive feedback.👇
.
We just tell you to be coachable and assume you’ll figure it out.
.
Most performers don’t. They passively nod, feel terrible inside, and change nothing. Or worse, they get defensive and miss the feedback entirely.
.
The fix when you feel defensive is simple: ask for specifics. Clarifying questions turn triggering feedback into something you can actually do.
.
Three questions you can use are in the slides.👊

Most people don’t fear failure—they fear being seen trying.
.
The people who grow the most are the ones who fully commit. They make big mistakes and learn quickly from them.
.
Trying to hide won’t protect you. It just guarantees you’ll never become the performer you were meant to be.

How to earn respect as a leader.
.
Here are six things I’ve learned from 18 years of coaching marching band.
.
1) Know your people. Ask why they joined and what they want out of the season.
.
2) Make them feel like they belong. Make space for them & help them feel seen.
.
3) Say the expectation once, then hold it for everyone, every time.
.
4) Correct the behavior, never the person.
.
5) The drowning can’t call for help. Go to them first.
.
6) Notice progress out loud. Effort that gets seen gets repeated.
.
Every one of these tells your people that they matter, and that’s the only thing respect has ever been built on.

This is about trust and respect for the people around you.
.
When someone doesn’t follow through, others have to adjust, cover, and compensate. That adds up fast.
.
Strong teams don’t leave each other guessing.
