This fossil slab was discovered in the Upper Mississippian limestone layers, dating back to the Carboniferous period, 330 million years ago. It displays a well-preserved crinoid community—close relatives of sea stars and sea urchins—that once thrived in the warm shallow seas of present-day North America.
Each crinoid fossil features a long stem-like structure anchoring it to the seafloor, with pinnate tentacles atop the calyx used to filter plankton from ocean currents. These echinoderms, commonly known as "sea lilies," are not plants but rather delicate, slow-moving creatures whose mineral-rich skeletal fossils are exceptionally well-preserved. The fine details of their ossicles and branching tentacles attest to the tranquil sedimentary environment in which they were buried.
This petrified bloom of ancient life evokes a coral garden frozen in time. It portrays resilience and fragility—life that once swayed with the tides, now silent and stone. Their intricate beauty calls to mind the profound rhythms of the Earth, as even the most stationary fossil whispers of oceans long vanished.
