Opinionated British Senior Software architect and developer, 27+ years experience building and modernising complex systems.

I have worn many hats meaning I can design, build, mentor and ship. This channel covers software architecture, system design patterns, legacy modernization, databases, cloud infrastructure, and hands-on coding โ€” all through the lens of someone who still writes code every day.

Content for senior developers and architects who care about the craft, not the theater. Minimalist architecture. Right tool for the job. No unnecessary complexity. New videos weekly covering architecture patterns, engineering culture, PostgreSQL, Python, Docker, AWS, Azure, GCP, and building software that actually makes sense.

What language is this?

int times = 3;
char *ToRepeat = "Hello";
char *Result[16];
Repeat(&ToRepeat, times, &Result);

I finally did it - I Spend more time arguing with AI and correcting it's slop than getting any work done. Even moved to duck duck go which is truly woeful - but at least it isn't pushing AI down my throat!

The Code Guy

I used to be a DB Guy. Years ago I went into a company and their website was really struggling. Slow. Unstable and it was keeping the devs up at night , literally to keep it online.

The culprit? An ORM that had been generating progressively worse SQL as the data grew. One query had joined the same table to itself six times. Nobody knew why, and more importantly nobody knew how to fix it.

We changed the ORM to call carefully crafted Stored Procedures instead of letting it do its thing. It was a nightmarish few days, but in those few days of work the site was flying.

I've carried that experience into every architecture decision I've made since. And it's the reason I built this series. Not theory. Not best practices recited from a blog post, but from real, painful experience.

Following best Practices and the architecture preaching of the day had got this company in to the mess it was in, and the only way to fix it quickly, to stop the bleeding was to throw the rule book out and go back to basics.

This is the series I wish existed back then. Watch it in order. It's one argument, and it lands harder that way.

I'm losing faith in AI. Here's why.

I spent today stress-testing Claude Sonnet 4.6 and ChatGPT 5.2 on real work. Code review, research verification, source checking. Tasks they're specifically marketed for. This was not my intention โ€” I just got so frustrated.

The results were staggering.

Both invented problems in code they had full visibility of โ€” just 3 related files. Context wasn't even a factor.
Both failed basic contextual reasoning. Both deflected when caught.

ChatGPT 5.2 took it further. It made 13 documented mistakes in a single session. When challenged it admitted:

"I implied that the problem was how you used me rather than how I performed โ€” which shifts responsibility onto you instead of owning my failure."

When asked how that sat with its core directive to be helpful and polite it admitted:

"It violates it."

The latest models consistently generated inaccurate and incoherent slop the entire conversation โ€” with ChatGPT even failing to operate within its own programmed guidelines.

If both models haven't regressed, I'm clearly missing something.

My predictions on AI made just weeks ago are looking increasingly spot on.

Please tell me I'm not alone by sharing your experience?

The more I use AI - The more annoying and bad it seems. Anyone else feeling like this?

Iโ€™ve developed a very particular set of skills โ€”
tuning skills, built up over a long career.

Skills that are a nightmare for performance bottlenecks.

I can spot slow code just by reading it.
No profiler. No noise. Just disciplined tuning.

Redundant calculations? Gone.
Unnecessary object creation? Eliminated.
Failed optimization? Rolled back โ€” no mercy.

In this video, youโ€™ll learn my surgical tuning method โ€”
a simple, repeatable approach:
Identify methodically. Eliminate precisely. Prove with data.

Iโ€™m curious: How do you share Python code across projects or teams today?

Copy/paste between repos
PyPI registry
Private Git repos
File system
Something else?

Drop your answer below ๐Ÿ‘‡ โ€” Iโ€™d love to see how youโ€™re handling it.

Ever had a function get out of hand with a ridiculous number of parameters?
Yeah... weโ€™ve all been there.

In my latest video, Iโ€™ll show you how Pythonโ€™s packing and unpacking can turn that mess into something elegant โ€” and way easier to reuse and maintain!
