The Donkey’s Shadow – A Clever Court Case
One hot afternoon, Mulla Nasruddin rented his donkey to a traveler who wanted to go to the next town. They agreed on a price, and the traveler set off, riding the donkey under the blazing sun.
After some time, the heat became unbearable. The traveler stopped and sat in the donkey’s shadow to rest. Seeing this, Mulla Nasruddin objected and said:
“You have rented my donkey, but not its shadow!”
The traveler replied, “The donkey and its shadow are one. If I rented the donkey, the shadow comes with it.”
Soon, the argument grew serious, and they both decided to take the matter to court.
In court, the judge listened carefully. After thinking for a moment, he said:
“If the shadow belongs separately, then it should have been mentioned clearly in the agreement. Since it was not, the donkey includes its shadow.”
Mulla Nasruddin smiled and accepted the decision.
But as they walked out, they realized something surprising — during their argument, the donkey had wandered away!
The judge then said wisely:
“While you were fighting over the shadow, you lost the real thing.”
Moral
Do not lose what truly matters while arguing over small and unnecessary things.
گدھے کا سایہ – ملا نصرالدین کا دلچسپ مقدمہ
ایک گرم دوپہر کو ملا نصرالدین نے اپنا گدھا ایک مسافر کو کرائے پر دیا تاکہ وہ اگلے شہر جا سکے۔ کرایہ طے ہو گیا اور مسافر گدھے پر سوار ہو کر روانہ ہو گیا۔
کچھ دیر بعد گرمی بہت بڑھ گئی۔ مسافر نے گدھے کو روکا اور اس کے سائے میں بیٹھ کر آرام کرنے لگا۔ یہ دیکھ کر ملا نصرالدین بولے:
“تم نے گدھا کرائے پر لیا ہے، اس کا سایہ نہیں!”
مسافر نے جواب دیا، “گدھا اور اس کا سایہ ایک ہی چیز ہیں۔ جب میں نے گدھا لیا ہے تو سایہ بھی اسی کے ساتھ ہے۔”
بات بڑھ گئی اور دونوں عدالت پہنچ گئے۔
جج نے دونوں کی بات غور سے سنی اور کچھ دیر سوچنے کے بعد کہا:
“اگر سایہ الگ چیز تھا تو معاہدے میں اس کا ذکر ہونا چاہیے تھا۔ چونکہ ایسا نہیں ہے، اس لیے گدھے کے ساتھ اس کا سایہ بھی شامل ہے۔”
ملا نصرالدین مسکرا دیے اور فیصلہ قبول کر لیا۔
لیکن جب وہ عدالت سے باہر نکلے تو دیکھا کہ گدھا کہیں غائب ہو چکا ہے!
جج نے حکمت بھری بات کہی:
“تم دونوں سایہ پر لڑتے رہے اور اصل چیز کھو دی۔”
سبق
چھوٹی باتوں پر جھگڑتے ہوئے بڑی اور قیمتی چیزیں نہ کھو دیں۔
