I did a little digging into the Tupac murder weapon situation because the contradictions are wild, and I found a couple of things that completely explain what happened. Ultimately, it really just boils down to two different forensics labs coming to two completely different scientific conclusions.
To break it down, the gun, a .40-caliber Glock, was physically found in a Compton backyard in 1998.

The literal street detective who pulled that gun out of the dirt was Compton Gang Detective Timothy Brennan. In 2006, California forensics ran ballistics on it, and their lab examiner officially declared it a perfect match to the bullets that killed Tupac.

But here is where the real point of contention happens. When the ballistics data was sent over to the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department so they could take over the weapon, their lab technicians looked at the exact same scratch patterns under a microscope and completely disagreed with California.

The Vegas lab officially ruled the match inconclusive, claiming the gun actually belonged to an entirely different, local California shooting.Because ballistics matching is a visual, subjective science that relies heavily on a human expert's interpretation, unlike DNA, which is an exact digital match, you had two competing expert opinions from two different law enforcement agencies. And because Las Vegas officially rejected the gun based on their lab results, the weapon fell into a bureaucratic black hole. It was sent back to California, left unclaimed, and eventually melted down in a routine disposal of confiscated weapons.

Detective Brennan has spoken out publicly about this, expressing his absolute fury that the system completely dropped the ball and let the actual physical weapon get destroyed.This explains the exact discrepancy people keep fighting over online. Legally, because the physical weapon was melted down and the Las Vegas lab formally rejected the match years ago, the gun cannot exist as physical evidence. When the detectives testified to the Las Vegas Grand Jury to indict Keffe D, they legally could not say the weapon was "found." If they did, the defense would demand to see it, and the fact that the police destroyed it would throw the whole trial out. To keep the case legally clean, the official stance under oath has to be that no weapon was ever recovered. Physically, Brennan held it in his hands; but legally, it doesn't exist.
