Over the week, I have been learning about social work practice. This learning experience has deepened my understanding of social work practice across various levels—individuals, families, groups, and communities. Two major aspects particularly resonate with me: the boundaries of confidentiality and the concept of attending as a nonverbal communication skill.
In practice, it is crucial for social workers to inform clients of the limits to confidentiality as part of the informed consent process before assessment begins. This point strongly resonates with my personal experience. I was once referred to a social worker, and although I completed the service, the practitioner never explained the boundaries of confidentiality. This omission made me reflect on how important it is for social workers to uphold professional obligations and ensure clients are fully informed about what confidentiality entails and where its limits lie (e.g., duty to report, duty to protect).
A thought-provoking concept I learned is the skill of attending, which refers to the nonverbal aspect of communication. Techniques such as maintaining eye contact, leaning slightly forward, and facing the client convey presence and interest, making clients feel heard and supported. This reinforced for me how small gestures can significantly enhance client engagement and trust.
I am also intrigued by the evolution of the social work profession and its role in promoting individual and social well-being, advocating for change, and addressing systemic barriers. I recognize that many of my previous experiences—particularly in my role as a supervisor—align with core social work values. Many of my team members trusted me with their personal challenges, which I attribute to the rapport I built with them.
As I continue to shape my identity as a future social worker, I am committed to establishing strong, ethical, and empathetic relationships with clients and colleagues. I will also practice clear boundary-setting and use self-disclosure strategically, ensuring it serves the client’s needs without shifting focus away from client's goals.
