On this day, President Ferdinand Marcos signed Proclamation No. 1081, placing the Philippines under Martial Law.
Although it was announced publicly on September 23, September 21 is remembered as the official date.
Martial Law closed Congress, silenced the press, and curtailed freedoms, marking the beginning of an era of dictatorship.
