Transmissions from the Dark is devoted to all permutations of blackened esoteric artistry from the extensive underground of black metal, with Sundays showcasing dungeon synth, dark ambient, folk and other bm-adjacent musics.
I do consider submissions from bands and labels. If you would like me to upload your releases, send an email to the address below, or message me on IG, FB or BlueSky - but please be aware, I receive a huge number of requests, and cannot respond to them all. Also note that I am unlikely to feature your release or even reply to you if you are using AI artworks.
I do not monetise videos or make any money from this channel. Labels or third party agencies may monetise albums by themselves. I believe bands and artists should receive compensation for their work, and hope that funds received by these agencies find their way to the creators.
This channel was formerly part of Order ov the Black Arts, until July 2022 when I parted ways.

Two masters of their art combine on this magnificent split of majestic regal solar synth and medieval ambience.
The gentle radiant grandeur of Knight of the Sun joins the rustic folk flourishes of Paladin in Druidic Brotherhood; released on cassette by Fogged Entity

This was a nice surprise package! I wasn’t expecting it to arrive for a good month yet, so it’s a bonus to receive one I f my favourite albums of the year in physical form before 2025 is out.
Once again, M tweaks his sound and style to warp a reverence for the past into a vitally energised new form.
Hails Lamp of Murmuur for continuing to reward my faith from the first demo (even before then). From the first stirrings of Thunder Vigil and Ecstasy, I could feel this was a vine that would continue to bear fruit, and it is indeed bountiful.
Hails Wolves of Hades for carrying the torch and releasing the recent albums.
Hail all who walk this path!

Vote on this weeks' album poll with one of the UK's current most menacing and potently malevolent bands - Abduction

This week’s poll is inspired by me doing me year-end albums. I haven’t necessarily got very far, but I am stuck on Abduction – so for this week’s Friday/weekend poll, we are going with the Derby-based band’s four most recent albums
This does mean missing out the debut from 2017, To Further Dreams of Failure which jars my elitism, but allows me to include Existentialismus which is what is spinning right now.
Last weeks’ Akercocke poll didn’t work out so well – it was going good, but then got taken down because of the boobs on the cove art. I should have predicted that, but never mind. Will get the sharpie out if I have those kids of covers again.
anyway – here’s ABDUCTION!

Friday poll time! Or perhaps I should say ‘weekend poll’, because I don’t put an end time on them, and so far they have remained nicely active for several days – check the Community tab on the channel for the previous ones
This week I have another neat complete 4-album discography to choose from, with the albums by mighty Viking mythologists, Windir!
A standard bearer and wayfinder for the early black metal movement, Valfar’s foundational pagan horde delivered four albums which helped define that ‘viking black metal’ style and sound – valiant, epic, icy, fiery, heroic, whose clean melodicism and broad-chested chants carrying on the chill winds for miles over clear-aired mountains and bright snow.
So what will it be, between these four classics?

Vaulted hails to the mighty Sokol Keep for this wax artefact of Demonic Horde.
A new pressing of a lost relic from the vintage dungeon synth era of the misty distant 90s; atmospheric synthesiser clashes with battle armoured heavy metal, war chants and valorous percussion, in an enduring epic for the ages!

Back with another Friday poll. This time, let’s go back to the roots, and one of my favourites from the foundational Norwegian scene: Satyricon
Let’s go with the first four full lengths. Might do the next four in another poll, and a third round to match the winners.
There are few albums that surpass Dark Medieval Times in the musical techniques and style, raw atmosphere and cold conviction which define this form of true black metal. The only album that is a match is their own Volcano, which I think is the perfect combination of all that came before it.
With that, and beyond it, Satyricon remain one of the most interesting bands of the original scene, continuing the rebellious and self-actualising spirit to experiment and create for themselves rather than within the confines of any genre expectations. So yeah, may come back to them again.
For now, let’s vote in the original four:

Received from Realm and Ritual recently; a ferocious entity of lunar antiquity and mystic energy from the ancient forests of North America, and the Ordo Vampyr Orientis enclave. The raw symphonic malevolence of Banshee Moon’s debut release - Devil of the Pines.
Featuring members of Bat Magic, Bad Manor, Bellum Mortis, and Beneath Moonlight, Banshee Moon pays homage to early 90s symphonic black metal through dense orchestration, bestial screams, and masterful riff work, mixing frenzied speed with cooly laconic passages of assertively slower pacing.

Starting a week late, but here’s my new month artist intro post for the Dungeon Synth Sunday banners of November (and possibly December).
For the next weeks, DSS streams will feature the artworks of Patrick James Woodroffe (27 October 1940 – 10 May 2014)
An English artist, etcher and drawer, Woodroffe specialised in fantasy science-fiction artwork, depicting scenes of surreal and psychedelic narratives and collage, grand fantastical visas of flora and fauna, or intergalactic planet-roaming spacecraft. He provided images for a great many bands and authors, including Budgie and Judas Priest, Robert A Heinlein, Michael Moorcock, Jane Hipolito's and Willis E McNelly, the conceptual art for The NeverEnding Story II, as well as many exhibitions and installations of his own making.
His style combines elements of the fantastic realism of Salvador Dali and Ernst Fuchs, details of the Flemish masters and touching primitives of the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. His pictures are bright and full of detail, laced with an optimistic zeal, seeking fabulous worlds with wondrous touching creatures and landscapes, to surpass the beauty of reality itself.

Received last week, this action packed album from Technicullis - Goblin Horde
A Tolkien-esque sub-world of troublesome goblins and mythical mystery, depicted through casiotone ambience, raw melodic drama, and stabs of synthcore revelry.
The second cassette release from Blaggard Records, marking it a worthy label to keep an eye on.
